Surviving Your First Five Waves
Every defender's first run ends the same way: overwhelmed, surrounded, and a little embarrassed. That's by design — Wildlands: Last Village is built so that losing teaches you, and everything you earn survives your defeat. This guide gets you through the first tier of waves with your dignity (and your village) intact.
Understand the rhythm: 15 waves, a boss every third
A full run is fifteen waves split into five tiers. Waves one and two of each tier are the swarm — ants at first, then bees, scorpions, goblins, and worse as tiers climb. Every third wave, a named boss rises. That rhythm is your planning clock: waves one and two are for earning coins and taking as little damage as possible; the third is for spending your health, mushrooms, and special wisely.
Early waves also arrive along the roads. Watch the paths into the village, not just the enemy closest to you — a defender who drifts too far chasing one ant lets three more walk in behind them.
Death is not a setback — it's your economy
This is the single most important thing to understand: every coin you earn is yours forever, win or lose. Your hero's training levels persist. Your unlocks persist. A "failed" run that banked a pile of coins was not a failure — it was a work shift. New players who internalize this stop playing scared, take smarter risks, and progress twice as fast.
So on your first few runs, your real objective isn't wave 15. It's coins. Fight where the enemies are thickest at the wave's start (that's where the earnings are), bank the losses, and come back stronger — literally.
Learn the two buttons that keep you alive
Attacking is instinct; surviving is technique. On desktop, Q blocks and SHIFT dodges (touch controls surface the same moves on mobile). The habit to build in your first hour: attack in short bursts, then block or dodge, then reposition. Standing still and holding the attack is how the swarm surrounds you. Blocking beats damage you can see coming; dodging beats damage you can't outblock — bees diving, groups collapsing on you. If you're ever unsure, dodge through a gap rather than backing into a corner.
Spend your mushrooms like a miser
The M key eats a mushroom to heal. Mushrooms are precious precisely because boss waves exist: healing at half-health during a swarm wave is usually a waste; that same mushroom at wave three, six, or nine can be the whole fight. A simple rule that serves new defenders well: no mushrooms on swarm waves unless you're below a third of your health. Save the pantry for the names.
Your special is a panic button — until it's a weapon
Your hero's special (R) clears the screen around you. New players should treat it as a get-off-me tool: surrounded, cornered, low health — fire it. As you learn wave patterns, you'll graduate to using it offensively at the moment the swarm is densest, converting one press into a wave's worth of coins. Both uses are correct; one just pays better.
Grab your Rescue Code early
From the in-game menu, generate your Rescue Code — a short code that carries your entire progress to any other browser or device. Do it after your first good run, not someday. Progress saves automatically on your device, but the code is your insurance and your bridge: start on your phone at lunch, continue on your PC at night. (Full details in the pause menu — it takes ten seconds.)
The first-hour checklist
If you remember nothing else: fight along the roads, not in the open. Burst, block, dodge, reposition. Bank coins without fear of dying. Hoard mushrooms for boss waves. Special when surrounded. Rescue Code once you have something worth keeping. Do those six things and wave five will fall on your second or third run — and you'll be ready for the bosses waiting every third wave.
